Yes, but less than many people claim. Schema markup tells search engines and AI systems exactly what your business is, where it is and what it offers, instead of leaving them to work it out from your wording. That removes ambiguity, which helps. It will not make a thin, vague or unreadable website worth recommending.
What is schema markup?
Schema markup is a small block of structured data in your page’s code, invisible to visitors, that labels the facts on the page. Instead of a machine reading “Call us on 01983 216222” and guessing that is a phone number, the markup states it: this is a business, this is its telephone number, this is its address, these are its opening hours.
It uses a shared vocabulary from schema.org, which the major search engines created together and still use.
How does it help with AI search?
AI assistants that search the web are trying to answer a question confidently. Clear, consistent, machine-readable facts make that easier. If your website, your Google Business Profile and your directory listings all agree, and your site states those facts in structured form, there is less for an assistant to doubt.
Think of it as removing reasons to hesitate rather than adding reasons to choose you. The reasons to choose you are still your services, your proof, your reviews and what other people say about you.
Which types matter for most businesses?
- Organization or LocalBusiness: your name, logo, address, phone, opening hours, social profiles and company details. This is the foundation.
- Service: what you offer, where, and ideally from what price.
- FAQPage: the questions and answers on a page. Useful because AI assistants look for clean answers to specific questions.
- BreadcrumbList: how your pages fit together.
- Article: for blog posts and guides, with a named author.
- Product: if you sell products online.
What will schema not fix?
Schema describes your content. It does not replace it. If your service page is three vague sentences, marking it up perfectly gives a machine a precise description of three vague sentences.
It also cannot help if crawlers cannot read your page in the first place, which is a common problem with sites built in JavaScript. We cover that in why your JavaScript website might be invisible to AI assistants.
What is the review markup trap?
This one is under-reported. It is tempting to add star ratings to your own website’s markup, using your Google review score, in the hope of stars appearing in search results.
Since 2019, Google has not shown review stars for a business marking up reviews about itself on its own website. Its guidelines also say you should not mark up reviews collected from other sites. Doing it anyway gains nothing and risks a manual action against your site for spammy structured data.
The better approach is to show your real reviews visibly on the page, with the reviewer’s name and a link to where they came from, and leave the stars to Google Business Profile and genuine third-party review platforms.
How do I check my schema?
- Run a page through Google’s Rich Results Test to see which structured data it finds and whether there are errors.
- Use the Schema Markup Validator at validator.schema.org for a fuller technical check.
- Make sure the facts in your markup match your page, your Google Business Profile and your directory listings exactly.

Common questions
Not necessarily. SEO plugins such as Yoast add the basics automatically. Service, FAQ and price details often need adding separately, either through the plugin’s settings or a small code snippet.
No. It makes your facts easier to read and trust. Whether you are recommended still depends on your content, reviews and what other sources say about you.
No. Google stopped showing stars for businesses reviewing themselves in 2019, and marking up reviews from other sites goes against its guidelines. Show real reviews visibly on the page instead.
Whenever the facts change: a new address, phone number, opening hours, services or prices. Out-of-date markup is worse than none, because it contradicts your other listings.
