Wine and drinks

Your cellar door is quieter. Your website shouldn't be.

UK cellar door sales have fallen two years running, and direct-to-consumer is still only about 30% of English wine revenue, against 68% in the United States. That gap is the opportunity. Producers who sell well online are not waiting for footfall to recover.

The problem nobody at the vineyard has time to solve

English wine is growing properly now: 1,158 UK vineyards, up 4% in a year, £477.6m of revenue growing at around 6.5% a year, and more than 1.5 million people a year visiting for tours, tastings and weekends away.

But most producers are set up to sell at the gate, and the gate is getting quieter. The website was built once, often with lovely photography and nothing at all on whether anyone would find it.

So you end up with a beautiful site that sells nothing, while the people who would happily buy a case are finding somebody else.

What actually matters for a vineyard online

Five things decide whether your website sells.

Getting found by wine tourists

People search "vineyard tours near me", "English sparkling wine tasting Sussex" and "winery wedding venue". These searches are local, seasonal and ready to book, and most producers rank for none of them.

Selling direct without friction

Case sizes that make sense, shipping that does not frighten people at checkout, and a route from a tasting to an order that does not rely on someone remembering you three weeks later.

Wine club retention

A club member is worth many times a one-off case, and clubs leak when nobody is watching the renewal journey. The website is where that is won or lost.

Events, tastings and venue hire

Often more profitable per visitor than the wine, and usually buried four clicks deep.

Trade enquiries

Restaurants, independents and distributors look you up before they email. What they find decides whether they do.

And then there is AI

Ask ChatGPT for English sparkling wine producers to visit in Sussex and it will name a handful. Ask it which English wines to buy as a gift and it will give you a list.

Someone is on those lists. Most producers have never checked whether it is them.

This is how a growing share of people now shop, and the tools that answer those questions read websites very differently from Google. Read more about AI search optimisation.

How we work with producers

We are not a wine agency. We are an organic growth agency that works with vineyards alongside law firms, fit-out contractors and franchise brands. The things that make a vineyard findable are the things that make any business findable, and we will not charge you a premium for knowing what a cuvée is.

Most producers start with an Organic Visibility Audit: a fixed price, no commitment, and you keep the findings whether you work with us or not. Some take it away and fix things themselves. Others move onto an Organic Presence plan and we keep going.

Questions producers ask us

Can’t see your question? Call 01983 216222 or send us a message.

Usually, yes. Most vineyard websites are well designed and badly found. Those are different problems, and the second one is cheaper to fix.

Yes, and more importantly the part before it. Traffic you cannot convert is not a win, and a checkout nobody reaches is not a shop.

Very, which is why the work needs doing before the season rather than during it. Talk to us in the autumn or winter if you want to be ready for spring.

We build within them. We are not your compliance adviser, but we know where the lines are on advertising alcohol in the UK and we will not put you near them.

No. Wine is one of several sectors we work in, so you get a team that does this full time, not a specialist with only one kind of client.
